Available in galvanized (ASTM A975), Galfan (Zn-5%Al alloy), and PVC-coated finishes, our gabion products meet international standards for civil engineering and infrastructure projects. Wire diameters range from 2.0mm to 4.0mm with mesh openings from 60x80mm to 100x120mm. Each gabion box features internal diaphragms at 1-meter intervals for structural stability and is filled with locally sourced rock fill (100-200mm grading). What wire diameter do I need for my gabion project?
For standard retaining walls, 2.7mm wire diameter is the most common choice. For heavy-duty applications like riverbank protection or coastal defense, 3.0mm or 4.0mm is recommended. PVC coating adds 1mm to the base wire diameter and provides superior corrosion resistance for marine environments.
What is the difference between galvanized and Galfan coating?
Galvanized coating uses pure zinc (ASTM A641), typically 245-275 g/m2. Galfan (Zn-5%Al alloy) coating provides 2-3 times longer service life than standard galvanizing, making it ideal for aggressive environments. For marine or highly corrosive applications, PVC coating over galvanized wire offers the best protection.
How long do gabion structures last?
Properly designed gabion structures with galvanized wire last 30-50 years in normal soil conditions. Galfan-coated gabions extend service life to 50-75 years. PVC-coated gabions in marine environments can last 60+ years. The rock fill itself is permanent and does not degrade.
What rock fill size is required for gabion baskets?
Rock fill should be 100mm to 200mm (4-8 inches) for standard gabion boxes, and slightly smaller (75mm to 150mm) for gabion mattresses. The rock size must be larger than the mesh opening to prevent fill loss. Hard, durable, angular stone is preferred over rounded river rock.
