Highway Slope Protection: 5,000㎡ Active Slope Stabilization System Installed

Highway Slope Protection: 5,000㎡ Active Slope Stabilization System Installed

Earlier this year, Haobo Metal was contracted to supply and install a comprehensive slope protection system for a major highway expansion project in southwestern China. The project involved stabilizing a 3-kilometer stretch of mountain slope adjacent to a newly constructed highway, with a total protection area exceeding 5,000 square meters.

Project Challenges

The site presented several significant engineering challenges:

  • Steep Terrain — Slope angles ranging from 45° to 75° with irregular rock surfaces and loose weathered material.
  • High Rainfall — The area receives over 1,200mm of annual rainfall, creating significant surface water runoff and erosion risk.
  • Active Geology — Historical rockfall activity with documented incidents of debris reaching the existing roadway below.
  • Vegetation Requirements — The client required a solution that would allow natural vegetation recovery to blend with the surrounding landscape.

Solution: High-Tensile Active Slope Protection System

Our engineering team designed an integrated protection system combining several wire mesh technologies:

  • High-Tensile Steel Wire Mesh — Diamond-pattern mesh with 2.0mm wire diameter and 300mm×300mm opening size, manufactured to EN 10223-3 standard. Tensile strength: 1,770 N/mm².
  • Anchor System — 8-meter deep anchor bolts at 2.5m×2.5m grid spacing, providing 80 kN pull-out resistance per anchor.
  • Support Ropes — Φ16mm wire ropes at top and bottom edges for structural reinforcement and load distribution.
  • Energy Dissipation Nodes — Brake ring assemblies at critical anchor points to absorb dynamic impact energy.

Installation Process

The installation was completed over 45 days by a team of 12 experienced technicians:

  • Week 1-2 — Slope surface preparation, anchor drilling, and preliminary mesh layout.
  • Week 3-4 — Anchor installation and tensioning, mesh panel attachment to anchors and support ropes.
  • Week 5-6 — Final tensioning, edge sealing, and quality inspection. Mesh tension was verified at 20 kN/m² across the entire surface.
  • Week 7 — Post-installation monitoring system setup and handover documentation.

Results and Monitoring

Three months after installation, the system has performed flawlessly through the region's rainy season:

  • Zero rockfall incidents recorded on the protected section of highway
  • Natural vegetation beginning to establish through the mesh openings
  • All anchor points and support ropes remain within specified tension parameters
  • Client satisfaction rating: 9.5/10
